Begovaya Tower
Schindler double decks open new possibilities in Russia
Moscow's Begovaya Tower is to become the first high-rise in Russia to boast Schindler double-deck elevators. The company's success in winning the contract was a direct result of its ability to engineer innovative mobility solutions.
Once completed in 2008, the 230-metre office tower in Begovaya Street will permit impressive views across the Russian capital, including one of Europe's tallest building – the Federation Tower in the Moscow City area - which Schindler is also supplying.
Schindler got involved in the planning stages of the Begovaya project, when it was realized that there would not be enough elevator shafts to cope with the building's mobility requirements.
"We analyzed the mobility needs of the tower, and came up with solutions involving changes to the structure of the building," said Alexey Mikhailov, who is responsible for the high-rise Top Range Division at Schindler Russia. "We also provided the double-deck elevator solution, which meant fewer shafts and elevators would be needed."
Full engineering support
"We took the risk of providing full engineering support before the contract was signed. And this finally helped us to get the job," added Turgay Sarli, General Manager of Schindler Russia.
The result is a significant cost saving for the client, as well as a building whose mobility infrastructure is perfectly suited to its capacity.
The Begovaya Tower is a development of the DS Development Company, which is part of Don Stroy Holding. The firm has built numerous residential towers in Moscow over the past decade, and Begovaya is its first office building. The architects, Tromos Bureau, are also part of Don Stroy Holding.
State-of-the-art
The tower has 41 floors above ground level, with the longest elevator run being 158.7 metres. In total, Schindler is to supply 12 Schindler 7000 passenger elevators, six of which are double decks. They will travel at speeds of up to six metres per second, and will be controlled by Schindler's state-of-the-art traffic management systems.
All elevators are equipped with user-recognition software and access control, and monitored by Schindler Lobby Vision system, which provides a complete overview of the entire network at all times.
The elevator cars are to be equipped with 15" color monitors, fed by Schindler's E-Vision which allows the customer to determine the content. The elevator interiors will be specially designed by the customer and supplied by Schindler craftspeople in Switzerland.
Mobility in the tower is assisted by two Schindler 9300AE escalators, which deliver passengers to the upper or lower car of the double-decks, depending on their destination.
Making up the complement of mobility solutions are three Schindler 5400 car park lifts and two Schindler 5300 service lifts.
Schindler technology gives you control of your building
Schindler's traffic management systems mean that instead of selecting their floor once they enter an elevator, passengers choose their destination on a panel outside and are then directed to the elevator that will bring them to their floor most rapidly. The system also makes provision for disabled passengers, for instance by holding doors open for longer.
People working or living in the building are often given access cards which they need only swipe across a sensor panel to be directed to the elevator taking the most direct route to their floor. The access card can also be substituted for something else such as a key ring. The system can be adjusted at any time so that access can be blocked to certain floors temporarily, for instance during renovation work.
Schindler technology also allows occupants of a building to dispatch an elevator to collect a visitor, who will be brought directly to a certain floor without needing to touch a button or to be given access to any other floor of the building.
Extensions include a personalized information system delivered on screens both in front of and outside elevators. Content is decided by the customer and the system is connected to the Internet so the information is always up to date. Users can even customise their content selection.
These technologies can be installed in existing buildings and they work with all types of elevators, including single- and double-decks (another Schindler innovation).
